General Tao Beef

Today was another busy/simple day. This recipe comes from once of those stands you can find at grocery stores that have all kinds of recipe cards that you can take home. The meal required very little preparation and effort on my part. I did get a bit of a surprise, though, because I have never tried General Tao sauce before and was not prepared for its intense flavor.

General Tao Beef, from Sobeys

1 lb Beef, thinly cut into 1/2 inch strips, patted dry

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/4 cup vegetable oil

2 cups Compliments cut broccoli

1 bottle VH General Tao Sauce

In a medium bowl coat beef strips with cornstarch and shake of excess.

In a large pan heat oil over medium-high heat, saute beef until golden, about 15 minutes.

Drain excess oil from pan. Add sauce and broccoli (thawed if frozen), cover and cook for 10 minutes over low heat.

Serve with noodles.

Yeld: 4 servings

Notes:

I didn’t have any broccoli, and Justin really doesn’t like it anyway, so I used a couple of sliced carrots. I parboiled them on the stove before adding them to the sauce. I served it with some large egg noodles.

Results:

I was not expecting the overwhelming flavor of the General Tao sauce. Call me sheltered, if you will, but I had never had before. It was spicy! Chloe ate one bite, and wouldn’t finish. Gavin ate all of his, but it took two glases of milk for him to do so. I loved mine (I enjoy the heat), but took my time eating it. Finally, Justin ate his later in the evening after the sauce had been sitting for awhile and was still telling me yesterday how how much he loved it. When I told him that it really didn’t much, aside from opening a bottle, he said he didn’t care and that I had to make it again!

Conclusion:

I would make this again for Justin and I, but I won’t offer it to the kids again until they’re older.
